Are sales jobs hiring remote?

Most tech sales is remote-friendly now, way more than pre-2020. Inside sales (SDR work, mid-market AE roles, smaller deals) runs fully remote at most SaaS companies because the work is mostly phone, email, and video. Field sales (enterprise AEs covering territories, hospitality and retail sales leadership, industrial sales) stays hybrid or on-site because customer visits are part of the job. Entry-level vs senior sales roles

The entry-level path in tech sales is well-mapped and one of the easier high-paying careers to break into without specialized credentials. The usual progression: SDR for 9-18 months, promotion to AE, AE for 2-4 years, then either senior/enterprise AE or moving into sales leadership. SDR is intentionally a proving ground. Outbound calling and emailing all day, learning the sales motion, booking meetings for the AEs. It's a brutal job most quit within a year, which is part of why companies hire SDRs aggressively and pay reasonably for it. Senior sales (enterprise AE, sales manager, RVP/regional vice president, VP Sales) postings dominate the open feed because companies trust public boards more for senior pipelines. How to compare two sales offers

Sales offers have more moving pieces than most jobs, and the pieces don't add up cleanly. Base matters less than OTE. OTE matters less than the company's real quota-attainment rate (if 30% of the reps make quota, the OTE is fiction). What actually drives whether an offer is good: average deal size, cycle length, who you're selling to (founders, mid-market, enterprise), inbound vs outbound mix, the territory or book you'll inherit, ramp period, accelerators above quota, clawbacks, and whether the product more or less sells itself or you'll be dragging it across the line. Recruiters lead with the OTE number, but it only matters if reps at the company actually hit quota. Ask in screening: 'what percentage of your reps were at or above quota last year?' Under 50% and the OTE is marketing, not pay. 70-80%+ is healthy. Also watch the base/variable split.   • How do I break into tech sales without prior sales experience?

    SDR is the standard on-ramp. Most SaaS companies hiring SDRs don't require prior sales experience. They want signs of work ethic, coachability, communication, and the ability to handle rejection. Recent grads, career-switchers out of retail/hospitality/teaching, military veterans, and athletes hire in well. The pitch in interviews: examples of resilient grinding in your past (sports, an internship that involved cold outreach, a side hustle), comfort on the phone, and a coherent reason you want to be in sales beyond 'I heard the money's good'. Bring a written list of questions you've researched about the company's product and market. Most SDR candidates don't, and standing out costs nothing.

  • Is tech sales actually less stressful than enterprise field sales?

    Different stress, not less. Tech inside sales is shorter cycles (30-90 days for mid-market, 6-12 months for enterprise SaaS), more deals, smaller deals individually, daily activity quotas, and constant pipeline pressure. Enterprise field sales is fewer deals, much larger ($500k-$10M+), longer cycles (6-18 months), more travel, more political complexity inside the customer's org, and quarter-end can decide your year. Inside sales feels like a high-volume grind; enterprise feels like multi-quarter chess. Top earners exist in both. The temperament that fits one rarely fits the other.

  • Are sales jobs going away because of AI?

    AI is changing the work, not killing the job.
