About Education jobs

Education jobs cover everyone who helps people learn, from K-12 (kindergarten through 12th grade) classroom teachers to university professors, curriculum designers, instructional designers in corporate training, EdTech (education technology) product builders, and education administrators. The work splits between direct teaching (with students, in a classroom or online), curriculum and content design (building what students learn), administration (running schools, programs, districts), and support roles (school counselors, special education specialists, paraprofessionals).

Postings here come from the same multi-source feed: broad aggregators, federal feeds, remote-only listings, and tech-heavy boards. The full list refreshes once a day. You'll see K-12 teaching positions across districts and states, higher-ed faculty postings, corporate L&D (learning and development) roles, EdTech product and engineering roles, and adult education and trade-school positions.

Signed in? The list is re-ranked against your values assessment, so the roles at the top are the ones that line up with what actually matters to you: comp, the kind of learners you'd work with, schedule (academic calendar vs year-round), the team. The scoring math is the same for everyone; the weighting is yours.

What does an education job pay?

Education pay sits below most knowledge-work fields and varies more by state and district than by company stage. K-12 teacher pay ranges from roughly $40k entry-level in low-pay states to $90k+ for senior teachers in high-pay states (NY, MA, CA, NJ). Public-school pay generally tracks union scales tied to years of service plus degree level (master's adds a meaningful bump). Private-school pay is more variable. Higher-ed faculty: adjuncts pay $30-60k per course or worse; assistant professors $70-100k median; tenured professors $100-200k+ at research universities. Corporate L&D pay is closer to other corporate roles: instructional designers $70-120k, L&D managers $100-160k, head of L&D at large companies $200k+. EdTech product and engineering pay matches general tech rates. Federal education roles (US Dept of Education, NIH education research) follow the GS (General Schedule) federal pay scale.

Are education jobs hiring remote?

K-12 classroom teaching is on-site by definition outside of online schools (a small but growing slice). Curriculum design, instructional design, and assessment-writing roles often go remote. Corporate L&D roles (instructional designers, L&D managers) are quite remote-friendly, especially at tech and consulting companies. Higher-ed faculty roles are mostly on-site with some hybrid teaching norms developed during 2020-2022. EdTech roles follow tech-industry norms (mostly remote-friendly). Tutoring and adult-ed roles split into two camps: paid platforms like Outschool, Wyzant, Varsity Tutors offer fully remote tutoring; in-person tutoring jobs require in-person presence. The remote toggle on this page filters to listings tagged remote-only or remote-first.

Entry-level vs senior education roles

Entry-level varies dramatically by track. K-12 teaching entry is gated by credentialing: state teacher certification (different in every state), often a bachelor's in education or a content area plus a teacher preparation program. Alternative certification routes (Teach for America, district-run residency programs) exist for non-traditional candidates. Higher-ed entry is gated by terminal degree (PhD for tenure-track; master's for adjuncts). Corporate L&D entry is more accessible: instructional designer roles hire from teaching, content design, training, and even adjacent fields like UX (user experience) writing. Senior roles split sharply: school principals and superintendents in K-12; full professors and department chairs in higher-ed; senior instructional designers, L&D directors, and chief learning officers in corporate; EdTech VP-level roles in tech. Pay scales steeply with credential and tenure in K-12 and higher-ed, more by performance and scope in corporate.

How to compare two education offers

Education offers diverge mostly on track and institution type. For K-12: pay scale plus step (years of service), benefits and pension (still significant in many districts), class size and student-teacher ratio, support staff and resources, school culture, the principal you'd report to, and the actual content area autonomy you'd have. For higher-ed: tenure-track vs adjunct vs lecturer, teaching load, research expectations, departmental funding, location, and the senior faculty you'd be peers with. For corporate L&D and EdTech: comp, growth stage, the actual product or program you'd own, and whether the company values learning outcomes or just learner engagement metrics. WorkWomp's offer comparison handles this kind of multi-variable decision. Save both offers, run the 5-minute values assessment so the scoring weights what actually matters to you, drop in interview notes (resources, culture, leadership), and the breakdown shows which offer wins where.

Weighing more than one education role?

These guides cover the part that comes after the search: deciding which role actually suits you. No signup is required to read them.

Common questions

  • Do I need a teaching credential to work in education?

Only for licensed teaching roles. K-12 classroom teaching requires state certification in every US state. Alternative routes (Teach for America, urban teacher residencies, emergency credentials) exist but you'll go through the credential process eventually. Higher-ed faculty roles require a terminal degree (PhD usually, master's for adjuncts and some teaching-track positions) rather than a credential. Corporate L&D, instructional design, EdTech product and engineering, curriculum design, education research, and educational policy roles don't require a teaching credential at all. They value subject matter expertise, instructional design skills, or general business and tech skills. Tutoring and adult education roles vary by platform; some require certification, most don't.

  • Is teaching a sustainable long-term career?

It can be, but it depends heavily on where you teach. Public-school teachers in high-pay states with strong unions, healthy pensions, and good administrative support build genuinely sustainable careers (30+ years, comfortable retirement). Public-school teachers in low-pay states, under-resourced districts, or with hostile administrators burn out at much higher rates and quit within 5-10 years. The intermediate pattern: many teachers stay 5-10 years and then transition into adjacent roles like curriculum design, instructional design at companies, school counseling, education consulting, EdTech, or school administration. Burnout is a real and well-documented industry problem; pay relative to credential requirements is structurally too low in many states; class sizes and behavioral demands have intensified. None of which means it can't be sustainable for the right person in the right place.

  • What is instructional design and how do I move into it from teaching?

Instructional design (ID) is the work of designing how people learn something: curriculum structure, lesson sequencing, assessment design, learning experience design, often in a digital format. The field hires from teaching, content design, UX, and corporate training. Teachers transitioning into ID typically start with portfolio projects (redesign a lesson you've taught into a digital module, build a sample course in something like Articulate or Captivate, document your design choices), then pitch yourself for L&D or instructional designer roles. The pay bump from K-12 teaching to corporate L&D is significant ($55-70k → $80-110k+ entry, $130k+ at senior). The trade-off: less direct student impact, more focus on tooling and stakeholder management.

  • What's happening with higher-ed jobs?

Tightening, especially tenure-track positions. The traditional academic job market has been structurally over-supplied with PhDs relative to tenure-track openings for 15+ years, and recent enrollment declines at small private colleges have accelerated closures and program shutdowns. Adjunct and contingent faculty positions have grown as tenure-track slots have shrunk. The bright spots: applied fields where industry hires aggressively (data science, computing, AI/ML, business), professional master's programs that pay self-sustainable tuition, and community colleges where workforce-aligned programs are growing. PhDs increasingly move into industry rather than academia after graduating. The term 'alt-ac' is widely used now for non-faculty paths.

  • Is AI changing education jobs?

Compressing the lower-skill content roles and creating new ones at the senior and applied levels. The squeezed roles: basic content writing for educational materials, simple curriculum templating, standard test-item writing, generic e-learning courseware. AI tools can produce competent first drafts of these, and many EdTech companies have cut content-writer headcount accordingly. The roles holding or growing: teachers (AI doesn't replace classroom presence, behavioral management, or relationships with students), instructional designers who can integrate AI into learning experiences thoughtfully, learning experience designers, education researchers studying AI's impact on learning, and policy roles around AI in education. The honest read: if your work in education is producing standardized content from standard inputs, AI is your competition. If your work involves teaching humans, designing learning around human nuance, or shaping policy, you're fine.
