About Design jobs

Design jobs cover the people who shape how products, brands, and experiences look and behave. The titles span product design (UX / user experience designer, UI / user interface designer, product designer), visual and brand design (brand designer, visual designer, brand identity), specialized design (motion designer, design systems lead, content designer / UX writer, illustrator), and design leadership (design manager, design director, head of design, VP Design). Industries differ: tech product design is heavy on figma, prototyping, and cross-functional partnership with eng and PM; agency and brand design leans graphic and visual; in-house creative teams at non-tech companies sit somewhere between.

Postings here come from the same multi-source feed: broad aggregators, federal feeds, remote-only listings, and tech-heavy boards. The full list refreshes once a day. You'll see SaaS / software-as-a-service product design roles, brand designer postings at consumer companies, content designer and UX writer roles, design ops and design systems positions, and the occasional agency creative role.

Signed in? The list is re-ranked against your values assessment, so the roles at the top are the ones that line up with what actually matters to you: comp, the kind of design work you want to do, stage of company, the team. The scoring math is the same for everyone; the weighting is yours.

What does a design job pay?

Pay scales sharply with company stage, specialization, and the design-maturity of the company. Product design at growth-stage SaaS: junior $80-110k, mid-level $120-160k, senior $150-220k+, staff/principal $220-350k+ with equity. Design leadership (design director, VP Design, head of design): $200-450k+ at well-funded private companies, higher at public tech. Brand and visual design pays less than product design at the same level: junior brand designer $60-90k, senior brand designer $100-150k. Content design and UX writing pays similarly to product design at growth-stage tech. Agency creative work pays lower than in-house tech at junior and mid levels but offers more variety and faster learning. Federal design roles follow the GS / General Schedule scale, lower than tech but with strong benefits. The salary filter on this page lets you set a floor.

Are design jobs hiring remote?

Most product design is remote-friendly. Figma's collaborative workflow made it the standard tool partly because it works well across distributed teams, and most growth-stage SaaS companies hire designers remote without hesitation. Brand and visual design at consumer companies trends more hybrid because some of the work involves creative direction and in-person reviews. Agency design can swing either way depending on the agency's culture. Federal design and government design roles are mostly hybrid or on-site. The remote toggle on this page filters to listings tagged remote-only or remote-first. Some senior design roles say 'remote' but quietly expect quarterly travel to HQ for design reviews; ask in screening.

Entry-level vs senior design roles

Junior product design roles are tough to break into without a portfolio. Most growth-stage SaaS companies require 1-2 polished case studies that show real design thinking: what problem you solved, how you researched it, what you tried that didn't work, the final solution and its impact. Bootcamp grads and self-taught designers regularly hire into junior roles at companies that value portfolio quality over credential. Mid-level (senior in some companies) is where the market is most competitive: there are many strong candidates and companies want both craft skill and strategic thinking. Staff and principal design roles (5-8+ years) hire on impact stories more than craft alone. Calibrating senior level from a listing: years of experience, scope (a single product surface vs. a full product area vs. cross-product design systems), team-of-one expectations vs. mentorship duties, and whether the role reports to a design lead or directly to a head of product.

How to compare two design offers

Design offers split sharply on dimensions that aren't obvious from the title. A 'senior product designer' at a 30-person Series A startup is doing entirely different work from a 'senior product designer' at a 5,000-person public company. Pin down: the size of the design team (a team of 1-3 means every project is high-stakes; a team of 20+ means specialization and scaffolding), the design-maturity of the company (does design have a real seat at the strategy table, or does it execute on PM specs?), the partner functions (eng-led, PM-led, or design-led culture), the tooling and design systems (mature systems and clear handoff vs. starting from scratch), and the manager you'd report to (a senior design leader who'll mentor you vs. a peer-level lead). WorkWomp's offer comparison handles this kind of multi-variable decision. Save both offers, take the 5-minute values assessment so the scoring weights what actually matters to you, drop in interview notes (the team, the design org, the manager), and the breakdown shows which offer wins where.

See how WorkWomp compares offers

Common questions

  • What's the difference between UX, UI, and product design?

Confusingly overlapping in 2026 because the field has consolidated. Traditionally: UX (user experience) focused on research, information architecture, user flows; UI (user interface) focused on visual design, layout, typography, interaction details. Most companies now hire 'product designers' who do both, plus partner closely with PM (product manager) and engineering on what to build and why. Where you still see UX-only roles: specialized UX research roles (qualitative research, usability testing, longitudinal studies). Where you still see UI-only roles: marketing pages, agency work, certain enterprise software companies. The honest framing: if a posting says UX or UI but the responsibilities span both plus product thinking, it's a product design role with a slightly outdated job title.

  • Do design jobs require a design degree?

Most don't. Portfolios beat credentials in design hiring, especially at growth-stage tech companies. Self-taught designers, bootcamp grads (DesignLab, Springboard, BrainStation, General Assembly), career-switchers from adjacent fields (marketing, copywriting, architecture, fine art, engineering) all hire well at companies that value portfolio quality. Specialized roles (design researcher, motion designer) sometimes prefer specific degrees but rarely require them. The credential that matters more: a tight portfolio of 3-5 real projects with clear problem framing, design decisions, and outcomes. The portfolio is the credential. Hiring managers see hundreds of resumes and tens of portfolios that look the same; the differentiator is showing your design thinking, not just the final artifacts.

  • How do I build a portfolio with no professional experience?

Make up projects. Pick a real product you use and redesign part of it with a clear problem framing. Pick a small business that needs design help and offer to do it free (or low cost) in exchange for showing the work in your portfolio. Take an open-source product and contribute design work. Document the process: the constraints, the alternatives you considered, the trade-offs you made, what you'd do differently. Hiring managers care less about whether the work shipped to real users and more about whether they can see your design thinking. Three or four well-documented projects beats a thin portfolio with 'shipped' on every line.

  • What's design ops and is it a real career path?

Real and growing. Design ops is the function that scales a design team: tooling, design systems infrastructure, design hiring processes, vendor management for research panels, design rituals and operations cadence. It's analogous to engineering ops or RevOps (revenue operations). Design ops at growth-stage companies starts as a fractional responsibility of a senior designer, then becomes a dedicated role somewhere around 8-15 designers on the team. The pay tracks design management at the senior level, sometimes higher because the skill stack (ops plus design context plus people coordination) is rarer. Design ops people often come from design backgrounds with operational tendencies; some come from program management.

  • Is AI changing design jobs?

Yes, mostly on the production layer. Image generation, layout drafting, copy generation for UI, motion and animation generation, asset variations: the parts of design work that involved producing many variations of similar artifacts are being absorbed by AI tools. The roles being squeezed: junior visual designers whose work is mostly executing existing patterns, marketing graphic designers whose work is templated, and some agency production design. The roles holding or growing: senior product designers whose value is problem framing and strategy, design system leaders, design researchers, design ops, and any role that involves coordinating across multiple stakeholders. The honest framing: if your design work is mostly executing patterns and producing assets, AI is competing for your seat. If your work is framing what to build and why, you're fine.
